My 90 year old grandmother tries the Oculus Rift

From reddit:

It was great watching her use it. To think she lived through the roaring 20s, the depression, and was 19 when WW2 started, and got to live long enough to use an oculus rift is mind blowing.

Arduino Powered Email Writing Guitar

Neat arduino project uses MIDI note data to write emails:

WK recently allowed me some time to tackle a problem that plagues workers everywhere whether they are working in advertising or some other job that involves a lot of email typing. I’m talking about the problem of not being able to devote enough time practicing shredding the guitar. The solution of hooking a guitar up so that you could use it like a computer keyboard had been in my head for a few years and it was a real joy to get to follow through on it.

Basic Medicines Piggyback Into Remote Villages on Coca-Cola Distribution Machine

via wired:

Simon Berry is piggybacking on Coca-Cola’s distribution system to bring life-saving medicine to the places that need it most.

You can buy a Coke pretty much anywhere on Earth. Thanks to a vast network of local suppliers, Coca-Cola has almost completely solved distribution, getting its product into every nook and cranny where commerce reaches. There are places in the world where it’s easier to get a Coke than clean water. In the 1980s, Berry was an aid worker in Zambia, and when he looked at Coke’s success, he saw an opportunity.

“Child mortality was very high and the second-biggest killer was diarrhea, which is simple to prevent,” he says. The standard treatment is oral rehydration solution, or ORS, which is essentially salt, sugar and water. “I had the idea of transporting ORS through the Coca-Cola system.”

Essentially, Berry piggybacked on a massive corporate infrastructure to deliver simple medical treatment to regions that normal would receive none. For more reading, click here.
